The Solution

For a child with dyslexia, independent, scientific, replicated research supports the use of a reading system that is simultaneously multisensory, systematic, and cumulative, with direct and explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, followed by synthetic and analytic phonics with intense practice.
This approach was originally created by Doctors Orton and Gillingham, and it is commonly referred to as an Orton-Gillingham system.

Barton Reading & Spelling System
For Children, Teens and Adults

Even though there is no "cure" for dyslexia, the Barton Reading & Spelling System that I use will help to greatly improve the spelling, reading and writing skills of children, teenagers or adults who struggle due to dyslexia.  It is a multisensory, explicit and systematic Orton-Gillingham-based intervention.  Susan Barton is the creator of this system and is an internationally recognized expert in dyslexia.  She was recently inducted into the International Dyslexia Association's Hall of Fame.
To be effective, students need at least 2 hours of tutoring each week.  Three hours would be even better.  A tutoring session lasts 50-60 minutes.

Within the last couple of years of teaching Remedial Reading, I discovered that, even though I was using the researched-based best practices for teaching reading, there were some students who didn't respond successfully.  After analyzing their reading behavior, my interventions did not work.  It was baffling because they seemed very bright, very often had great ideas and had a good speaking vocabulary.  I happened upon this article by Dr. Kelli Sandman-Hurley from the Dyslexia Training Institute which answered a lot of questions I had about these students who were a paradox to me.
I learned everything I could about dyslexia and found this website the most valuable.  And that led me to the Barton Reading and Spelling System.  I listened to Susan Barton give a free 3-hour seminar in St. Louis and I knew I had the correct intervention for these students who didn't respond to the strategies I had been using.
After exploring this website & its links and you suspect someone you know and love might have dyslexia, give me a call, text or email.  I am currently taking new students and have several openings.
